The Basics:
- All trips require advance registration unless otherwise specified. If weather is inclement, call leader to confirm that hike is still on.
- There is a $2.00 guest fee for non-members.
- The Hike Grading indicates the estimated length of the hike and difficulty. It is located after the date and name of the hike. The first character is the estimated miles. The second character is the estimated difficulty: (E) Easy, (M) Moderate, (H) Hard, and (S) Strenuous.
- An additional hike classification is provided for some hikes: MW denotes a Midweek Leisure Hike, which does not require prior registration. MHA denotes a hike that qualifies for the Maryland Hiker Award.

WEDNESDAY - MARCH 3 - PATAPSCO VALLEY STATE PARK/GLEN ARTNEY AREA - 7M Tweener hike in Baltimore County with more than 1100 ft. of elevation with a few steep inclines and several stream crossings. WEDNESDAY – MARCH 3 - APPALACHIAN TRAIL IN MARYLAND – 10H An out and back hike of a total of 10 miles going north from Harpers Ferry to Weverton Cliffs overlook. SATURDAY - MARCH 6 - PVSP: WOODSTOCK AREA - 9M This 9 mile hike in Baltimore County employs both the Patapsco Valley Thru Trail and some unmarked and unmaintained trails. Total ascent will be modest at about 800 feet, our pace will be moderate (that is, our average speed while moving will be 2.5 - 3 mph), and lunch will be at a scenic overlook. SUNDAY - MARCH 7 - PVSP: DANIELS DAM AREA - 6M Bad weather compromised this 6 mile Howard county hike when it was offered last December, so let's try it again. Highlights on this hike include some nice river overlooks, the "Indian Cave," and a one mile walk along the river. The hike includes a short section of very rocky terrain, has a total ascent of about 800 feet (including a number of short but steep inclines), employs a few tilted and irregular trails, may include some bushwhacking, and has no stream crossings to speak of. SATURDAY - MARCH 13 -SNICKERS GAP TO ASHBY GAP END-TO-END, VIRGINIA AT — 14S Length: 14 miles; Elevation gain: 3,000 ft. Hike on the "Rollercoaster" section of the Virginia AT one-way from Snickers Gap to Ashby Gap. There will be many hills to climb and descend, several nice winter views, and several stream crossings. SUNDAY-MARCH 14 -LOCH RAVEN RESERVOIR MERRYMAN TRAIL 6-7 E/M This is an out-and back hike, mostly flat with some hills. Average pace 2.5 mph. Nice views of the reservoir. Approximately 6-7 miles, largely on the Merryman Trail, but we will take some occasional side paths, one of which passes an interesting, secluded graveyard. MONDAY – MARCH 15 – MONITORING TRIP TO PENNSYLVANIA Survey five areas in Pennsylvania monitoring external corridor boundary survey of Federal lands on Appalachian Trail. Locate, record, clear, uncover and flag survey monuments reporting condition to ATC. Also, record, repaint as needed, flag and clear all witness trees and boundary marks. Three modest stream crossings, some rocky terrain and about 1000’ of cumulative ascent (and a like amount of descent), the most difficult ascent being about 250’ over 0.4 mile. SUNDAY – MARCH 21 – UNION MILLS AND HASHAWHA – 10H This hike starts on the Kowomu Trail portion of the Union Mills trails and transits Spiegle Hill before entering Hashawha. WEDNESDAY – MARCH 24 – BIG SCHLOSS, GWNF – 13H A beautiful 12.5 mile circuit hike in Great North Mountain area of George Washington National Forest on the Virginia-West Virginia border. Spectacular views across ridges and valleys from a castle-like rock outcrop. The longest climb is 1,300’ over 4.8 miles. Total vertical elevation is 2,440’ up and down. Trail is rocky at places. SATURDAY – MARCH 27 – MASSENUTTEN SCHLOSS LOOP – 17.5S Take in some of the best vistas in Virginia’s Massenutten Mountains. This hike ascends the Big Schloss cut-off trail, and then covers sections of the Mill Mountain, Tuscarora, and Little Sluice Mountain trails to Little Schloss. If the group desires, the White Rocks overlook can be included as a spur off the loop, adding ~3 miles. There is a sort car shuttle between the starting and ending trailheads. SUNDAY – MARCH 28 – COOT PENINSULA IN LIBERTY RESERVOIR – 11M This moderate 10-mile hike follows the northern bank of Liberty Reservoir immediately off MD-32 in Carroll County. We will hike through mixed hardwoods and pines on mostly smooth, unmarked dirt service roads and single-track side trails used by local equestrians. Lunch will be at Coot Peninsula with a 270-degree view of the water. Total ascent is minimal, with a few small hills, and there are a few stream crossings. The hike marks the second annual celebration of the Thurston Griggs Trail, named in honor of one of our illustrious Club members. This year we'll ascend the Griggs Trail to the Appalachian Trail and then proceed south to Greenbrier Lake, where we'll have lunch. Total ascent is 2,500+ feet, including an 800 foot climb before lunch and two 500 foot climbs after lunch. Terrain is very rocky in many sections, stream crossings are minimal, and our pace will be moderate (that is, average speed while moving will be 2.5 - 3 mph). Hike on the Buzzard Rock trail to Elizabeth Furnace in the Northern Massanutten Mountains. Return from Elizabeth Furnace on the Sherman Gap Trail. SATURDAY – MAY 1 – SNICKERS GAP TO HARPERS FERRY – 18.5 S (13.5 MILE OPTION) This one way hike on the AT starts at Snickers Gap (VA Rt. 7) and ends at the Loudoun Heights trailhead near Harpers Ferry. With overlooks at Ravens rock and Loudoun Heights, the hike is a mix of climbs and gentle grades, smooth track and rocky sections, with a couple of small stream crossings. The hike includes some rocky sections and rugged terrain, involves about 1,000 feet of ascent, has no stream crossings to speak of, and will be conducted at a moderate pace (that is, our average speed while moving will be 2.5 - 3 mph). SUNDAY - MAY 9 - CUNNINGHAM FALLS/CATOCTIN MOUNTAIN - 13S This 13 1/2 mile modified circuit hike in Frederick County has plenty of water exposure (Hunting Creek, Hunting Creek Lake, and Cunningham Falls), enough rocky sections of trail to make your socks sing, and a total ascent of 3200 feet (including four climbs of 500+ feet, three of which occur before lunch). Even with all the climbing and the difficult terrain, we'll try to maintain a moderate pace (that is, our average speed while moving will be 2.5 - 3 mph). Bring lunch and plenty of water. WEDNESDAY - MAY 12 - MASON-DIXON TRAIL / OAKLAND RUN TO LOCK 12 - 11H Out and back hike of a total of 11.4 miles from Oakland Run south to restored Pennsylvania-Tidewater Canal Lock 12. Beautiful area of Mason-Dixon Trail in southern York County, PA. Wooded trail winds up and over river hills and down through valleys with cascading streams, hemlocks, rhodendron and rock outcrops. Walk along shore of Susquehanna River and enjoy views of Holtwood dam and river . Rocky at places plus two minor stream crossings. Pace averages 2.5 to 3 miles per hour. It covers a variety of terrain, with significant climbs near the beginning and end of hike, as well as to the turnaround point at the Chimney Rock overlook. Since this is an out and back, shorter options are possible; hike to Antietam shelter (14.2 m), or Tumbling Creek shelter (16.6 m). Breakfast stop certain, dinner stop option. SATURDAY - JUNE 5 - GREENBRIER STATE PARK TO WASHINGTON MONUMENT - 11H This out-and-back 11 mile hike in Washington County begins in a far corner of the Greenbrier State Park, proceeds past Greenbrier Lake, ascends the Bartman Hill Trail to the Appalachian Trail, and then heads south for lunch at the Washington Monument. There are many rocky sections of trail, no stream crossings to speak of, a couple of beautiful vistas along the way, and about 2,000 feet of total ascent (including a few decent climbs, the most strenuous of which is 520 feet in .6 mile).
