Update: The hazard trees have been removed and the shelter has reopened!

James Fry (Tagg Run) Shelter is closed due to numerous hazardous trees (NOBO mile 1,113.1). The entire shelter area is closed including campsites around the shelter and the privy. The area will remain closed until the trees can be removed.
Hikers should stay on the A.T. by the shelter and avoid the entire shelter area. Nearby camping options include:
- Alec Kennedy Shelter is 8.1 miles to the north.
- Toms Run Shelter Shelter is 10.9 miles to the south.
- Dispersed camping is allowed south of James Fry Shelter in Michaux State Forest. Be sure to follow the forest’s dispersed camping rules.
- There is camping available at Pine Grove Furnace State Park, 7.2 miles to the south. Contact the park for reservation and fees.
Hazardous trees are damaged, diseased, or dead and could fall at any time, making them extremely dangerous. Always look up before stopping or setting up camp and stay away from standing trees that are damaged, diseased, dead, or leaning.
